Hi, my wife and I want to upgrade from our Nikon D40 camera, trying to get input from people on the 50D, I been reading the reviews on both cameras but would like to hear from people on here who actually use the 50D all the time. Thank you.

William

If you have a large investment in Nikon glass or flashes, stick with it. Otherwise the 50D is a nice body. There are really great deals on the 40D which isn't any more expensive than the D90.

Sony A1, 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, 70-200mm F/2.8 GM OSS II, 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS, 35mm f/1.4 GM, Viltrox 16mm f/1.8, 1.4X TC, Flashpoint flashes

I have used both and like the 50D for the build quality and size. The D90 feels too small and toy like to me but is a consumer body. I am used to 1D bodies. If you have any Nikon equipment like a flash or lenses then stick to the D90 since its a great body and compatible with what you already have. If not then just go to a local store and play with both. I would guess you will like the Nikon since the controls will be familiar but you never know. The D90 will give you everything you need in a body in most cases and then some. The 50D as well. Keep in mind that the 50D will use more memory. Many forget about this. Don't rule out the 40D as well. Can't beat the price for such a good body.
If your looking to get more serious and going to buy into a system now is the time to look long and hard. They will both be great choices that will treat you well. If you see yourself getting serious down the road and buying more equipment then look at all factors involved. Choices and cost are in Canons favor but Nikon is not too far behind. It gets to be an expensive hobby if your not careful. The forums don't help either.:)

Canon has a better lens line up and Nikon has a better flash system. You are going to find trade offs in both but it wont limit you much from one to the other if any. Either body will give you great images and treat you well. Just be sure to try both hands on before making up your mind. You want to be comfortable with your choice in bodies when shooting.
