Just wondering if anyone uses the cheap ebay lights for background. I have an AB800 and AB400, and have been using speedlights on slave for background. But recycle and batteries are apain.
Any reasonI can't use the cheap lights just for background, or even hair lights, as long as they have some adjustment?
I hate to spend $300 just to light abackground
I'm thinking one or 2 of these type things:

i think these will be plenty powerfull enough with a guide number of 150ft 100iso - that should give you f16 at 9ft
I dont know these as im in the UK so a USA guy/girl might have better advice.
Rob.

If you looking for CHEAP back ground or hairlights I have used AC slave strobes for many years. All i did was buy a cheap shop light that has a spring clip from walmart and removed the reflector bowl. Screw in the AC slave strobe like any other bulb and point it where you want. They even make colored caps to the AC slave strobes but you can also just take a small gell and tape it over the flash tube to get any color you want.

Hey NVcameraman, I had the same idea and bought a couple of those cheap AC slaves to see how well they work. I haven't received them yet but was wondering if you need any kind of modifier to make the light more even on a backdrop, or if the spread is already pretty even? Also, it seems like they only fire at full power each time-- do you ever find you need to cover them up partially to reduce the output, or you can get enough control by moving them further away? Thanks!

Some bodies, some lenses, and that's all I'll list in case the wife sees this. ;)

If you need a light on the background, you need a light on the background. It's not any less important than the others--you need the same level of reliability, recycling time, et cetera, as the main and fill lights.

In the long run (or maybe even shorter), the same purchase strategy that allowed you to make a choice of main light should be what you follow for any lights you use with them.

I agree with RDKirk. The background lights are just as important especially considering recycle time, color temp, etc...
