Hey all,
Quick question that I'm hoping someone here will know.. Will the EE-S and EE-D screens for the 5D MkI fit the MkII? Selling my 5D next week and would like to keep them if they'll fit in the MkII.

Thanks!

It does not look like they are. The 5D takes the Ee-A, the Ee-D and the Ee-S. The 5D2 takes the Eg-A, the Eg-D and the Eg-S.

DP Review reported that the 5D Classics screens will fit the new 5D, however Canon warned that it could screw with the metering.

That said, one of the new features on the MKII is the brighter and better color balances VF, so it might be worth it to just upgrade the screens.

Don't bother with the Canon screens...

Check out http://www.brightscreen.com/ (external link)

Their screens are so much better than the Canon screens. I have tried the Canon screens on my 5D and wasn't satisfied at all. The Brightscreen product for the 5D, and soon the 5D mkII make a huge difference. Manual focusing is way better than even the Ee-S. I have the #5 screen.

However...if you use f4 or slower zooms with a Brightscreen that has a PRISM center spot, spot metering will be off about 4-stops. I've tested this extensively and its pretty much fine with other zooms and primes. (never tried an f4 or slower prime though...)

I use a clear center spot on my screen anyways since its so bright. Its like not even looking through a viewfinder! Normal vision in the dark! I love it. I will be adding a brightscreen and their viewfinder mag to my upcoming 5Dmk II as soon as they are available!

You release the lever holding your focus screen and it lowers down on a little platform. You pull it out and lay the new one down on the platform. Press it back up to lock and you have a new focus screen in place.

You will still see the focus points like usual, but the background is slightly different looking depending on your screen. You can get screens that have lines etched into them for "rule of thirds" composition, or to see where an 3:4 ratio shot would be inside a full frame's 2:3 ratio, or a 4:5, etc... You can also get a split-prism just like cameras used to always have. It makes knowing when you are in focus so much easier. The very center on the image in a split-prism will look "split" in half kind of. As you get closer to proper focus, the image will unify and look normal.

Often when shooting in very dark conditions where autofocus hunts and fails, having a split-prism matte screen is a lifesaver. I've been able to manually focus in virtual darkness with the brightscreens. As long as you can actually see what you are doing, you can see your focus pretty well.

Now...if you are in so much darkness that you can't see with your eyes to focus...get an ST-E2 !!! It's IR signal to fire flashes doubles as a focus assist! It will allow the camera to autofocus in the dark! Works great!
