well i really want to get into strobist photography right now, but im totally new with it
ive read and read a lot about this stuff, but i would like to hear what you guys would consider and recommend as a set up for someone like me
including a flash, stand, trigger, umbrella, clamp and anything else that can help
so far ive looked at the Vivitar 285HV which will most likely fit for my budget, which will only be a couple hundred dollars

any help/recommendations?

Because Nikon makes better flashes than Canon.

I shoot canon and have bought a couple of Nikon sb-28 flashes for this stuff. They can be bought for $100.00 or less on Ebay if you shop hard and they are way better than any of the Vivitar cheapo flashes. I have a Vivitar 285HV and it will be my backup or 4th flash used because I have a 580EXII and 2 sb-28s that are all better flashes with faster recycle times and more control.

strobist gear adds up fast. you can get bargains on each item, there is just a lot of items.

1 flash - $100
1 stand - $30
1 poverty wizard - $30
1 umbrella - $30
1 swivel - $15

You're over $200 already. Double that for a 2 light setup.

MPEX has some good strobist kits if you are starting from scratch - http://www.mpex.com/page.htm?PG=Strobist%20Kits (external link)

Go cheap...this shot was done with a cheap Sunpak 383 (pretty much same as the Vivitar you were looking at) bare and fired with with affordable and reliable cyber syncs. That is all you need to get going and keep you busy for a LONG time. I am a pro and I don't have much more that that regarding lighting equipment

Excellent Post-Info-List from "PWard" here:

PWard wrote in post #12085059 (external link)
someone in a simiar thread was asking about speedlite kits, and I pointed them to the following items. These are items I've purchased recently to get a "kit" together.

total of $255....less than the cost of a 430 EX II or 580 EX II.

http://www.amazon.com …ics&qid=1300936992&sr=1-1 (external link) Yongnuo-560 Manual Flash $65

http://cgi.ebay.com …ts_JN&hash=item35ad027edd (external link) Yonguo RF-602 wireless trigger set $60

http://www.amazon.com …TF8&qid=1300936847&sr=8-1 (external link) TWO 40" umbrella softboxes $30

http://www.amazon.com …TF8&qid=1300936878&sr=8-5 (external link) TWO light stands $40

http://www.amazon.com …TF8&qid=1300936890&sr=8-1 (external link) umbrella mount $30 X 2

not sure if you already have one flash or not...if not, add another $65 for a second 560 flash and your total is still roughly the cost of one 430 EX II flash.

I plan to get this in the near future. Same boat as you.
