Some bounce flash practice - fruit

I've had my flash for a week or so now. Playing, practicing and learning. C&C welcome.

Both shot with 400D, 70-200/4, and 580EX II bounced off ceiling.

Depth of field much too shallow in both shots.

Go to an art gallery and take a look at the still life's.

Insofar as the flash is concerned, I would say that it is too harsh in #1, whereas in #2 you get away with it - probably because of the far lower reflectivity of the orange in comparison with the apple (just a guess).
