Rob.

LCD's have also because it was extremely expensive to get larger LCD screens without getting imperfections such as dead pixels. That's why LCD was cheaper until extremely large screens.

Now the two technologies are priced very similar.

Funny thing is that I never saw the 1080p/i 780p/i debate come up here. That was the single largest debate while I was shopping and I thought it still was a highly debated subject.

I went with 1080p on both plasma's but stayed at 720p for the LCD because it's only 26 inches. I read that 1080p was extremely expensive to broadcast in today, but in the future it may become the norm.

We have both 1080i and 720i broadcasts here.

It was so funny when my wife went to buy her computer monitor and she insisted on getting a high definition model so she could view her photo's. I finally made her undertsand that photo's were actually better than high definition and 1080 or 720 was really only a broadcasting technology. We found her photo's to be double the resolution of her monitor.

I've only just spotted this thread, but you made a good choice Rob!
I looked into plasma -v- LCD around 18 months ago, and also ended up with a 42" Panasonic as being the best choice.

As for size, I can remember our first "large" TV. A Toshiba 33" CRT. It didn't look too big in the showroom, but when the two delivery guys actually brought it in it seemed absolutely enormous! But within a few days it seemed perfectly normal. I'll bet your plasma doesn't seem so large after a couple of days...

cheers

it does seem a bit big at the moment but just fits in the space nicely so we will soon get use to it ,i have to say it looks the part :)

From what i read i decided not to go to the 1080 but the 780 for a start it was a lot cheaper and for what we watch there would be little point in 1080.
Also at a later date i can upgrade to the above should i need/ want to when programs change to full digital 2012 here so 3 yrs away yet .

I just got the Sony 40" 40W4500 and it is truly superb. I waited a long time to replace my excellent 42" Tosh rear projection. Would recommend 100%. Took a little work to get the very best picture but with Sky HD it sometimes makes my eyes pop in wonder at the clarity. I have rediscovered TV watching! So much so I just got a home cinema set up again after several years without one. Again, solid improvements have taken place in quality and usability. Very nice system.

The sony was on my shortlist for being 40" panno dont do 40" .
on my 42" plasma i just changed it to dynamic mode from normal to give it some pop then turned the contrast down just a tad to bring it to what i wanted.

And I thought you academicians scorned TV watching. Causes the brain to harden. (And lord knows you could use hardening, but a bit further south.)

Neil, I am not a happy camper right about now. I just took some of my valuable ;) time to view your galleries. Besides the fact that the pics are excellent, how on earth do you handhold the 24-70 at the motorcycle show at 1/4 second and slower? That's just REE DIK YOU LUS. I am jealous and envious.

UPDATE
After a fair bit of reading and views here too
i just ordered A Panosonic 42" plasma rather than the LCD as said there is not a lot in it upto this size but from what iv read the Plasma just wins overall .
Thanks for help.
Rob.

Rob:

Good choice for plasma. Panasonic is near the top with Pioneer (best) and Panasonic and Samsung a toss-up for #2.

The rule of thumb for choosing plasma or LCD: Lots of ambiant light = LCD; If you can control the light = plasma.

You'll love the richness of the plasma. It's a bit 'softer' pic than an LCD. I have both and prefer the plasma, but that's just me.

Enjoy that Panny!

Excellent choice and a good price. I have the same set on my "to buy" list and will have one in the next few weeks.

A word of advice for anyone looking for a Panasonic 42 inch plasma though. Comet have one on offer at £599 at the moment. It's a lesser model than the TH-42PX80B so not quite the bargain it seems.
