Yes, I have joined the ranks of the DIY modifers. I decided to try my hand at making a beauty dish for my 580EXII.

I found a nice sized bowl at Target that is made out of fiberglass or some sort and it was large and light weight. It started out brownish but after a nice coat of spray paint it is now white. I went over to the automotive store and bought a mirror that had adhesive on the back and was convex. I chose one that was a circle shape with a bit of the top and bottom cut off. I thought it would work well because it was similar in shape to the flash head of the 580.

I used a painted tupperware top to mount it to and then used cut sections of a CD Spindle to mount it to the bowl. I had already used a dremmel to cut the hole in the back of the bowl and painted it before mounting the mirror. I put some soft foam strips around the cut opening and them put white electrical tape over the foam to protect my 580 when it slides and and out of the BD.

I used white gorilla glue to mount some hardware brackets tothe bowl and use ball bungies to secure the beauty dish to the 580 when it is mounted to the light stand. See pictures.

Anyway... here are a few pics of the BD and one take with the BD.

She's not bad. Not a Playboy Playmate like my model, but not bad.

Sadly, I have no nudes of my model, she's under contract with Playboy for that kind of work.

That is indeed sad. Still, nice lighting job you did with her.

jcoleman - thanks for your kind words as well. The lighting did work out pretty well for that shot. I wanted a that darker, moodier look for the shot.

The beauty dish was camera right and there was a hair light above her and slighty behind. I did some post processing on the sheer curtains because they were lit brightly by the sun. I didn't adjust her at all.

so the purpose of the white piece infront of the flash head is to bounce the light back to the bowl and give it a nicer look?
