I have no idea what it is, nor can i find it in any of my ref books, at least 2 pairs seen on the lakes in front of the JCB headquarters at Rocester.Others on the lakes included Black Swans, Madarins and Egyptian geese which suggest they might be non UK birds, i`m just curious as to what it is. Second one i know is a Poachard, well i hope it is ;)

Hi aligator.

First one is a Hooded Merganser. Keen to know where you shot this as there are only a couple in the UK. I have one near me at Weymouth on the RSPB's reserve. It was supposed to have been blown over from the States where they normally live.

Your second shot is a Pochard. 'Over there' they obviously call them "red-heads."

Both great shots, but so pleased you have a hoodie near you.

Edit: I see you already say where you shot this. Sorry.

Yes Vulcan, this is the one. I posted a shot here a week or so ago.

Hi Matt and Larry, your Redhead is very similar to our Pochard, same genus, the only thing that i can see to tell them apart is that one has red eye the other (redhead) a yellow one. Thanks for your input.

Hi Carlton, JCB introduce about 4 rare species a year into their pools where these were taken.

Well that's what the ranger, who, I think, lives on the island told me last year.

You may of noticed some species with clipped wings to keep them there I suppose.

Correct. The closest i could get to it was the Redhead. Will have to write down the difference ;) thanks for the correction.

Hi Carlton,
Cant believe you've been to jcb, I was there on sunday. Working in ashbourne and stopped off on saturday without my camera. Could'nt believe my eyes when the Hooded Meganser was there. Went back sunday morning thinking they'd be long gone but no he was there along side his female. Got a few shots myself but didnt post as the Red breasted geese were missing some flight feathers. I have read a few articles about the bamford collection of waterfowl. So not sure what if anything is there by nature's doing.

Did you see the Crested Pochards?

Great shots by the way :)

Regards Phil
