To everyone's surprise, the Great Blue Herons have started mating in earnest already! It's at least 3 weeks earlier than any of us have ever seen before. Anyway, here are a couple GBH shots from the world famous Venice Rookery (about an hour from my house), and a Tricolor in the surf on a cloudy day at Fort Desoto.
GBH performing a mating display. The only thing I wish is that all those berries were ripe (bright red).

This one is rather interesting. The day was VERY gloomy and overcast, so I decided to lug the 580 flash and Better Beamer down into the surf with me. I think the effect of the flash-lit bird against the breaking wave is actually quite nice.
