I have a chance to "just grab something". Chances like this don't come to often. I want the TSE for product/ architecture stuff. But my daughter had her first soccer game tonight and my 100-300 did fine, but was lacking a bit. The 2 are not priced to far appart to be of any worry. And in truth neither will be used as much as I want to think. Im sure I will be happy with either I get....just cant decide.

The TSE will probably make more money for me. But the 100-400L will make more memories! Tough choice.

Just curious what you think on the two since they are so different.

Money? memories.. Money?.. memories..

I'd pick memories. Money can always be gained some other way.

Of course, the more expensive option is to rent the 100-400L for every game, but I doubt you'd do that.

Well you aready have something that will do the memories from the games (the 100-300 that did fine) and you could use the TSE to make money to buy the better lens for the soccer games.

I don't know a damn thing about shooting soccer or the 100-400 but is it the right lens for sports at night? I do love the TSE's though and the 90 is a great one so I may be a tad partial here.

Another point, the TS-E has a long learning curve. Some never do figure out all it's uses.

I have to wonder, it's either the 90mm TS-E or the 24mm TS-E in the title. Why not the 45mm TS-E?

24mm TS-E

you have a 100-300, so a 100-400 isn't that much different. TS-Es are like nothing you've ever used before. Aaaaaand I happen to have a mint 24 TS-E for sale... :D

Mmm, 100-400 not that different? Not in focal length perhaps, but leagues ahead in image quality.

Right madweasel, that is the point I left out. And I would sell the 100-300.

Why no the TSE-45? All of the research I have done on them say the 45 is the weakest of the three. And it is kind of an odd ball, Not wide enough or not long enough.

jacobsen1 PM me your price for the 24.

If I had to pick a TS-E lens it would be the 45mm.

Me too.

In fact, that's what I have and use most on 1.6X crop sensor cameras.

I have the 24mm too, but it sees less use. If I shot more architecture, the 24mm would see more use, whether on full frame or crop.

If I had full frame DSLR, I'd probably want the 90 too. But I don't have full frame, so don't feel much need for the 90. I do have the 100/2.8 Macro, though.

For now, if necessary I'll just rent the 90 TS-E if/when it's needed, and build the cost into the customer invoice.

That's something the OP could consider too, if occasionally the 90mm is called for in his work. As a specialty lens, it's available to rent many places.

Alternatively, quite often all three of the TS-Es are available lightly used, too. The reason is pros buy them for a specific job (charging the cost to the customer, of course), then sell them off after the job is completed.

I bought both of mine used and save a bit. You wouldn't be able to tell them from new.

All that being said, back to the OP's question... I'd get the 100-400 now. For most people it would be a more generally useful lens. You can probably recoup a little of the cost by selling your current zoom, too.

I've never heard anybody criticize the quality of the 45 TS-E, only the focal length as being 'in between'.

If anything, regarding optical quality, I've read more criticism of the 24 than the other two combined.
