I inquired about a MacBook Pro in my area on cragslist and this is the response I got:

Hello
I still have the laptop.
I have attached some pics with the laptop to this e-mail. I am now in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom.
Since I can't meet you and make the exchange, I would like to use a service that will help us with that:
http://www.tnt.com …transactions/details.html (external link)
TNT is a worldwide delivery company (like Fedex, DHL or UPS). You can see from their procedure that you will be able to check the laptop before I receive the payment. If you are in a hurry, I will use 2 day delivery (shipping is on me).
Let me know what you think.

:End Quote:

I emailed back and asked when they were going to be back stateside, just to see where this gos.
I've never even heard of TNT (Actually I stumbled across it searching for the TV Network TNT one day) for shipping, and how could I possibly reserve payment until I'm sure it's good?
Anyone have this happen to them before?

I've heard a number of first-hands about automobile transactions that were through some intermediary on account of the seller being either out of country, or in a different location than the automobile.

In every case it was a scam.

I'd be really cautious on this one. Maybe you can string him along like people do to those Nigerian scammers - good for some laughs.

EDIT: Google "TNT Shipping" - there's some scary stuff there.

EDIT2 - Here you go:

I originally saw the e-mail for a Sony Vaio Laptop on Craigslist.com. It said the location was Chicago. This is the e-mail I was sent back:
'Hello

I still have the laptop. The laptop was made to be used in USA, it is 3 months old and it comes with 9 months of warranty.
I have attached some pics with the laptop to this e-mail. I am now in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom.
Since I can't meet you and make the exchange, I would like to use a service that will help us with that:

TNT is a worldwide delivery company (like Fedex, DHL or UPS). You can see from their procedure that you will be able to check the laptop before I receive the payment. If you are in a hurry, I will use 2 day delivery (on my expense).

Let me know what you think.

Best,
Susan '

My bet is, it's a scam... Craigslist is full of scams... I would only buy something off of CL is it was an in person deal and then I'd be careful, very careful of the item..

My personal rule in dealing with Craigslist:

ONLY do person-to-person, local, and cash.

Works everytime. It's pretty scam proof this way. The response you got is a scam, by the way.

It's a scam for sure.

Also just giving you guys heads up. Even in person please always be the one pick the meet up location (inside a busy place is always good or next to a police station)

BTW: Craig's list ads have a short shelf life and are ridiculously easy
to delete. For anyone to move and not change their ad at the very
least is being misleading.

Craig's List has a nice tutorial on how to avoid scams, they
even discuss instances of forged US postal money orders which
I thought were fairly safe. I don't ship and only accept cash
on local deals. No problems...

I'm fairly certain that every SLR seller on Craigslist is now in the UK...

Not quite. Half of them are in Nigeria. ;)

This is hilarious you guys.
Thanks for the input. I had a stinking suspicion this was a scam.
I always heave a *sigh* when I see a new post saying "40D for $400! Is this a scam?", or "1D Mk III on Craigslist for $1000!".
This was the first time I saw a response like this.

I asked them when they'll be back in the states and haven't heard anything back.
It's like, If you're living abroad and have the item with you, why don't you sell it locally over there? Why list it in MY local CL? Stupid scammers.

Oh, and to further my embarrassment, it was $475 for a 2.2Ghz Dual Core 15.4" MBP with 2 gigs of ram. Yeah, right.

True but at least the ones in Nigeria only want 10% from you to make the rest of the deal happen...

Check this out. I got this back from "Susan".
Hi Sam

I will return home in 16 months. I have been relocated here with my work.
I see that you don't know how our deal will work out. Did you read TNT's procedure on their website? It is explained there how their service works. Let me know after you read their procedure so I can be certain that we are on the same page:

http://www.shiptnt.com …ot.overseas.transactions/ (external link)

Thanks,
Susan

:end quote:

I haven't googled TNT yet, but they sure make it sound good.
What should I tell "Susan"?
I want to see how far they will go to swindle me...
