Thanks for the post. I had not thought of the filter having such a dramatic effect on picture quality, this is great information. I plan to do my own comparison test today. I'll post results if they turn out.

Thanks again for the post.
SteveKunkel:

Sometimes there is just no alternative except use one like a cpl. I agree a UV is really just for glass protection and a hood is a better option. Some pro nature photographers have told me to change my hoods to rubber ones (cheap also) as they absorb shocks better and wont impact the mounting etc.

Hi new to this forum but came across here looking for some solutions to issues seen on this lens (VC kicking in was causing a movement in lens that was disconcerting but apparently expected)

Here are a few shots I have managed to snap with this lens in my short ownership of the lens. I have applied a Chromatic Aberration adjustment to the Seals in order to remove lines top and bottom of the seals.

So glad I bought the lens as it gives me a great range compared tot he kit lens that came with the 500D, all i need to do now is learn more about Exposure/Aperture settings as I am off to Wales in a few weeks, and hoping to capture the scenery.

I was playing around last night in low light, but the pictures got very noisy as I tried to reduce the Aperture and increase exposure, ISO was automatically switching to 1600 and quality was lost dramatically.

on the new PZD feature, how does it handle lens creep compared to the non-pzd? thanks.

PZD is only how the zoom motor works. It has nothing to do with lens creep. Having said that, the latest issue of Popular Photography has a review that says that the lens creep is also present in this version. Read the text under the picture of the lens...

Actually , lens creep does not affect me... I am actually glad there is a lock feature unlike other zoom lenses... I feel safe walking around with this lens locked....
