Hey, with that 3D setup, we could all make our own images for those old stereo-3D viewers. Now, who wouldn't want that:)!

they guys who would rather use that for 3d kids films

No, red is not a slr killer. Yes, red is a pro-camcorder killer, if they can have it downscale to 1920x1080 on the fly. Most places don't need 3k, let alone 5 or even frickin 28k, they just need a good, clean 1080p@29.97, 25, and 24fps

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

I don't think Red is meant as typical (pro) camcorder, to be honest, I don't think it's news camera at all. From this what I understood when I was checking specs few years ago when it came out, it's more oriented toward movie production. And there, you need more then just standard HD.
But I admit, I wasn't checking much lately, so I can be wrong.

That was probably true then with the Red One but with the release of Scarlet they're trying to cover all the bases. I don't know what a functional Scarlet with 2/3 sensor and fixed lens will run but it will probably undercut Canon's prosumer HD cameras which are as much as $9000.

I have to say not much is compelling about the Scarlet in terms of a still camera. It'll probably be larger and heavier than a 1D body and doesn't look like it'll be as comfortable or usable and it is not a DSLR. You have to use a screen or EVF like you're using liveview which I'm not fond of.

It seems to do for HD video cameras regarding stills what the 5D II is doing for still cameras regarding HD video; ie it will be a great modular HD video cam that can produce great stills but not ideally just like the 5D II will be a great still camera that can produce stunning HD video but is missing key features like different frame rates, xlr inputs etc.

If I had plenty of disposable income I'd get one. Heck I'd get several. But since I don't I'll settle with the 5D II if and when I can get it.

What is this for, market wise? The Blair Witch Project?

I recall all the past talk of the 'dSLR killer" but a rig that runs $20,000 and still needs lenses is not really going to do well against the XSi and D60 down at Costco. Plus this thing is big and bulky and well.....not good as a still photography camera really. Plus it has no direct print button.

Seriously though.....don't the real movie boys shoot with much fancier gear that this? And no home videographer is gonna shell out for this thing. That leaves......the Blair Witch Project right?

Saw it, am very excited by the concept but I don't think it will rock our world and performance needs to be proven. I think the modular concept is one we might see more of down the road although I think it would need to be done better/differently to be accepted by more people.

Peter Jackson seemed pretty excited about the previous RED model. I think real filmmakers are keen on this for a number of reasons -- it gets them out of Panavision's back pocket, it gives them a ton more options for lenses, it gives them a cheap, almost disposable camera for dangerous or action sequences, and the quality is really phenomenal, even compared to 35mm film.

The graceful inconspicuousness…a street photographer's dream come true.

By the way, this is not the vaunted "DSLR killer" is it? This, as noted already, is still aimed more at the video crowd, right?

Those Leica snobs are going to be sooo envious...:D

I agree that it's not much of a threat to DSLRs. Too bulky, too expensive and no view through the lens. However you might want to tell these filmmakers that their equipment isn't fancy enough: interviews at bottom right of page - http://www.red.com/ (external link) films shot with Red cameras - http://www.red.com/shot_on_red/ (external link)

Yeah, for the moment. But with QFHD (2160p) (external link) in the works and Super-Hi/UHDV (external link) on the horizon, someone's gotta be leading the pack with video equipment ready for the future.

I like the modular nature of the system more than anything else. Also, their primes are really tasty-looking.

I don't think content providers, read movie studios, are gonna wait until QFHD is rolling out to the consumer before they make the content. If they shoot movies now with these ultra high resolution cameras they'll have all the data ready to roll out when the displays have caught up to the spec. All they have to do is down res it for the current technology. And in the meantime many theathers already have 4k projectors so there is an outlet for this stuff right now.

I personally think 2011/2012 this will be a DSLR killer, not now though
Big kudos to RED for pushing change though
I really like the modular system, but believe it would be much more fragile than my canon kit
Also, the AF will be lacking until they figure it out
And finally a 25-100 2.8 IS
