Just found out yesterday I need 3 fillings. They are small and the dentist recommends I have them repaired sometime in the near future. So, I am left with the option of white composite or silver amalgam fillings.

I have silver fillings from when I was a child. Seem to held up fine, but don't like the grayish color my teeth have become. Thank God they are the rear teeth so not seen. Well, they are seen when laughing which is another reason I'd like to go white.

I started doing a little reading last night and got discouraged as there was a lot of negative talk about the white composite fillings on the web site I found. The complaints were so bad I stopped reading and decided I should post to a forum where I can hear results from real people :)

I spoke with my mother last night who is in the process of having her silver fillings removed and replaced with whtie composite. I even read that one patient was exposed to mercury poisoning when having a silver replaced with a white :(

I know POTN rules states to keep the topic on track with photography....
Well, if our health (teeth are big part of health ;)) is not above par, so long for getting out and shooting a nice day

I've never had problems with my white ones. I wasn't even aware there was controversy about it.

White softens the light more and creates lower contrast.
Silver is more efficient and creates higher contrast.

the small amount of mercury in silver fillings of old is so irrelevant as to be a nonissue. However, now that the white fillings are available, I'd say that's definitely the way to go. Better yet, take care of your teeth, brush after every meal and floss, and you should not be getting cavities.

About 12 years ago I got several crowns and fillings (after years of neglect). White fillings were used and they're very difficult to see.

No problems at all.

No problems with them at all.

Touching them up for a little wear is easy too :)

White! Silver is oldskool and isn't good for your teeth. My dad's spent about 8k on his teeth including having all the metal fillings pulled. Good luck!

Funny thing is, I've never had a problem with it....I eat "Bit-O-Honeys" like nobody's business (a candy notorious for pulling fillings out).

My dentist will only do white, and I haven't had any problems with them. The fact that they look a million times better helps too.

Well, this thread is right up my alley...

I'm a dental assistant and my boss never puts amalgam in anymore. Chewing on silver fillings drives the silver down into your teeth, causing them to crack. If they crack, you could end up getting a root canal, and then a crown, which would be around 2000 dollars total for both. So go with the composite. It's more flexible and allows your teeth to give more naturally.

Man...this post made me sound really boring...
