What batteries does everyone use in their external flash units? Are there any high powered rechargeables that last longer and recycle faster?

+1 for Sanyo Eneloops. Take a look atthis similar thread and read Tim's post all the way at the bottom for another opinion. I like the Eneloops myself because they are always charged and ready to go unlike the Powerex batteries he mentions. I get pretty good recycle times with the Eneloops in my 580 EXII.

Yep another one for Eneloops. Things are AMAZING.

I did an entire wedding, on one set in my 580exII. The recycle time was starting to take longer during dancing so pretty much everything was finished at that point.

I started off with a cheap set of rechargeable batteries and after 50 shots, they started taking 2 - 4 seconds to refresh. I made a switch to eneloops and I've done hundreds of shots and it takes 1-2 seconds depending on the power.

I see that you've already ordered some, but just thought I'd mention that the higher the mAh value, the better. Right now I have some Duracells that are 2650mAh and the difference over using normal alkaline batteries is incredible. The recycle time when firing my 580ex at full power (as a test) is literally cut down by about half when using the rechargeables. They're amazing.

Not always true. My eneloops outlast my other rechargeable batteries with higher ratings. The eneloops are only rated at 2000 mAh.

Interesting note, thanks for mentioning it. Is this true for all Eneloops, or is there a certain version of them that tend to perform this way?
