How big can you print from a 1D's 4mp?

So, I got an invite to come up to do some snowboard shoots at the local hill, and I'm sure I could sell a few shots to the boarders. I'm a little concerned about bringing my 40d into the snow, so I wanted to step up to a weather sealed body.

My question is, how large can you print with good quality off a 1D at say 400 iso before the MP limitation becomes apparent.

Some cameras, some lenses, plenty of gaffer's tape and beer.

at a decent resolution, you could probably push printing 8x12 with no crop. Though, I can't say I know this from experience, just my best guess. But if it's snowboarding out in the hills (no clouds, bright sunlight), you could probably shoot at a lower ISO too.

Using software like alien skin blowup i can up size raw files from the 1d very easily. Using this large print do not seem be a problem. Just don't make them too large. I have a 1d if you need one and open to offers =]

I know photographers who have printed 16x20 with no problem from the original 1D. As a matter of fact I have a 16x20 print from a Nikon D1 and it was only 2.74 MP.

I'm looking for one that's like <$500... One that's been used and bumped, but loved... lol

I'd generally think of it like this:-

How heavily can you crop into a 4mp image??

Unless your framing and composition is spot on every time will you be wanting to crop the image much?

There are no Resolution Police, so you can aim for any print size you want.

See those billboards on the road? There's a good chance the camera used had less resolution than the camera you use.

The real question is "how close will people get when they view the image?"

I've held 16x20s from a 1D classic right up to my eyes and seen nothing wrong with them sharpness/resolution wise. Your average punter certainly won't see any difference.

ISO 400 might introduce some grain into a large print but nothing earth-shattering.

Conventional wisdom is to use 250 ppi for high quality, so 2462 is good for 10". On the other hand, there are claims of 100ppi minimums (your monitor only does about that!), so that is good for 24"...it in part depends upon the level of quality and the viewing distance for the print. Why not simply print a section of the photo at 100 dpi and see how attrocious you think the result is?

I had traded a T-Shirt for some photos from the USA Olympic Track trials, and the shooter's main camera had went bust, so he had to use the 1D classic. I was worried at first, but they were fine for 18x12" 'posters' I made

40d is fine in snow, just don't drop it off the chairlift... Just know snowboarders aren't gonna pay anything for prints anyway...

You do not have to own the camera! Take any photo from anywhere, even copied from a friend's photo sent to you...crop out a 1000x800 pixel section, the divide the pixel count by 100 says that section gives you a 10" print at 100 ppi. So print a 10x8 print of that crop, and you would then see how objectionable you would find a print from a 1D at 100 ppi
