I want to get two subscriptions. One that is more gear/software related... I've settled on PC Photo for that and one that is more art/technique related that would have a lot more actual photos in it, talk about the same shot with different lighting techniques, etc. Focus on nature and landscape photography. Any recommendations for the latter?

It would help if you mentioned what country you reside in..... It's missing from your profile.

I beleive this site is the one place for information, whether it be technical or artistic. There are a ton of members who will steer you in the right direction for information. e.g. if you posted a thread of "Lighting Technique Books", you will get several titles with opinions. Whereas magazines may not have the info you want, therefore, hoping the next issue does.

I suppose this doesnt answer your question though does it!

Hey Imahawk, we must've been thinking the same thing because I was just about to post the same question as you. So now that saves folks from having to give the same advice. I hope this not considered a thread hijack. If it is let me know and I will delete and repost. Just didn't want to have two of the same posts out there.

Background: I just moved to the SLR world in October from a point and shoot world (still have it though). I mainly shoot birds, wildlife and when the opportunity arise landscape.

I too am looking to subscribe to at least two of these photography magazines: Photolife, Popular Photography, Outdoor Photography and Digital Photography and wanted to get feedback on which is better for my newest to the SLR world.

So any suggestion on these or any other not posted.

Thanks

If I were you'all, I'd go to a store that carried magazines, buy an issue of a bunch of them, do the same next month, then decide what appeals to you.

Besides what is mentioned above, there is Shutterbug, and there is also the subscription to Photoshop User that you get if you join NAPP.

Don't know about everyone else but I find the photo mags (like any other rag) tend to run out of new material etc & repeat themselves, especially in techniques / "how to" type lessons.
Rip the back pages of the same old adverts out and you have a very thin mag' indeed.

I can see that being true for the old timers (not age but photography experience) who've been doing photography for some time but for the new heads like myself it would be good info for maybe a year at least because we most likely have not been exposed to the information.

but I agree that magazines tend to run out of info or repeat info in a different way because I used to subscribe to several Mustang magazines and after awhile it all began looking the same.

Thanks for the input

That sounds very logical.

Are you aware of any that targets SLR newcomers like myself?

Thanks

I get Outdoor Photograher and Popular Photography, and I can say I learn from them both. True, there are a lot of ads, but I've been getting both for over three years and I'll stop when I don't find at least one good, worthwhile thing in every issue.

On the newbie question - I was wondering the same thing. I have a friend who is new to SLR photography and would like to find a good mag for the newbie.

Photoshop User pricey but worth it. Plus free shipping from B&H.

Another ringing endorsement for Outdoor Photographer. I also get JPG Magazine, Aperture and EOS Magazine (Aperture and EOS Mag are both quarterly). I was receiving a subscription to Shutterbug as well, but I think I'm going to let it lapse, I don't really care for it.
