I have this photo of my cousin and her new hubby taken yesterday (very important date for the family) and she loves photo's in B&W but my B&W Skills run to desaturation and thats it really! I have attached the original and the attempt I have made but wanna try and get the pic more moody, sure you know what I mean.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated - fell free to edit the pics, but please tell me how you did it so I can learn and have a go with some other pics!

Phil

Something like this, perhaps?

IMAGE: http://www.pbase.com/image/105995702/original.jpg

This uses a free filter set called Virtual Photographer (external link) to do the conversion to black and white. Then it adds a vignette using the methods outlined here (external link).

With the grain in this photo, it really looks like it's from the early century....along with the decor in the pic. Does she like sepia? I have a feeling this shot would look great in sepia... so I did a little edit.

I converted to a subtle sepia, removed a little bit of noise, sharpened just a little, played with curves for contrast and added a vignette

This is easily the BEST version of this picture. the color is well balanced but still interesting as it ought to be. It is smoother than I certainly could have gotten it (the original is pretty noisy). and they look really lovely. Just show it to her in this form and see what she thinks. Dont knock it or apologize for it being sepia just show it to her and let her decide what she thinks. If she doesnt dig it, show her other options. I think she'll see the quiality here
