Took some photos during warm-ups at the Crunch game last night. I didn't take a lot photos during the game cause our seats were right in line with the top of the glass. I really need to get noise ninja or something do reduce the noise in the photos. But here are a few. C&C welcome!

Not too bad. PP would help these out alot.

Here's a quick go of the goalie shot. (Hope you don't mind) I would crop tighter, but didn't want to disrupt your copyright.

Personally, I dont see much going on in the photos, probably since they look to be from warmups. #2 looks OOF, although the exposure looks good!

Yes they are from warmups and #2 is out of focus. I will be going through the rest of the photos today and I will post more soon.

Thanks,

I think what Sadler meant (correct me if i'm wrong Sadler) is that you can sometimes get away with a few good action shots during pre-game warmups. Yes you told us these were from warmups, but I've seen work where you wouldn't be able to tell if it was taken during a game or just practice.

Case in point:

Not so obvious:

From the perspective of a team's photographer (and no I'm no where NEAR one) it would be a wise decision to shoot during warmups for the semi-action shots for individual player pictures. Why? Because their movement is much more predictable during the drills rather than trying to shoot them during the game with players screening and ref's standing in front of you.

As for your shots, were they really underexposed right out of the camera? Keep in mind, when you underexpose a shot, and save it in post processing, you'll gain significant amounts of noise. So try to expose to the right!

Sorry for the long post, just had one of these in me before I pass out for the night.

Justin, great explanation of what I was trying to say! That first shot is great... despite the empty seats being a give-away for warmups, you could always claim the game was in Lowell ;)

How would I go about "exposing them right"? BTW this is only my third game shooting hockey haha I am just beginning

Lets say the images you shot were at f2.8 and 1/500 and you were at 1600 ISO (didn't see your EXIF). The images are a bit dark. If you looked at your histogram for the images I suspect the peaks would be somewhere in the middle. You want to "brighten" the image and move those peaks to the far right, but not so much as to blow out the whites. To do this:

1. Shoot at 1/400 which will gain you a stop of exposure but may give motion blur
2. Bump to 3200 ISO (not ideal due to nosie)
3. Stay at same settings and dial in some exposure compensation (EV)
OR
4. Bump these up in post processing (however the less you need to do here the less noise introduced)

Here is an example that was shot at 1/400, 3200 ISO and f2.8 with 0EV. I had to bump up exposure in Lightroom to get it bright enough and as you can see from histograms (before and after the bump up), I have moved peaks to the right. There is a bit of noise introduced but tolerable enough for me. By the way, this was a warm-up shot but could just as easily have been an in game shot.
