Ok, I need to replace my manfrotto head as its not quiet up to holding the 500mm lens....I tried and its not quiet up to it.... so any one got any recommendations as to which head might be better?

I know the wimberleys are fab but I was thinking I'd just stick with manfrotto as the tripod is the same make its the Neotec one...and that seems fine just the ball head isn't quiet up to the weight.

Thanks

Dawn,

If finances will run to it, I'd suggest you consider the Markins M20. I use the smaller M10 on an 055PROB tripod for up to 400mm, and have been very happy with it.

I previously used the Manfrotto 468RC2 and found it dropped it's head slightly every time I tightened it up, the beauty of the Markins design is that there is no need to tighten the ball if it's been set up for the lens and camera balance and weight.

Thanks Richard, I'll take a look at that..the wimberley looks great but it would run at about £500 by th etime I buy the arca ball head to go with itr :-( so if I can get away with just a new ball head that would be fine, since buying the lens pretty much cleared me out LOL.

If you're going to be using the 500 for birds or wildlife and you want a gimbal-type head (which is what I'd recommended), then the Manfrotto 3421 is probably what you want:

Just note that the way it's pictured in the link is not how most people use that head. It's actually used with the lens sitting on the gimbal instead of hanging off of it like in the picture. Not sure why they keep showing it that way.

Ive got the manfrotto 393 HEAVY TELEPHOTO LENS SUPPORT for my 500mm and its absolutly great! (same as what PacAce said buts its other name depending on which country your from)

Its perfectly balanced and easy to use. its apparently a bit bigger that other gimbal type heads but the size of it doesnt bother me at all
(plus its way cheaper than any other gimbal head ive heard of)
