After several months of reading through the boards, much thanks to POTN I've finally narrowed down my decision and just purchased a 70-200 f/2.8 IS which should arrive within a few days. I was pretty much up in the air a bit deciding on the IS versions of f/4 or f2.8, but having 2 young kids made it easier to decide with my daughter and her dance recitals which requires No flash and my son's indoor soccer games. I'll also be in beautiful San Diego next weekend for Thanksgiving and might either hit up the Zoo or Sea World so I can't wait to start shooting with this bad boy.
I still consider myself a noob at photography, but I'm very much encouraged to learn a whole bunch and what this "L" has to offer. With that being said, I'm pretty sure I've made an awesome investment decision with this lens...I just hope the wife thinks so as well.
Now my only concern is when I bust out the lens to start shooting I'm sure I'll get the looks and comments from everyone.lol

Cheers!

~Mike

Congrats...

But I have to admit, the board is single-handedly responsible for many people going broke in a very short amount of time. :)

It never gets old for me when I whip out my 1D MkIII with that lens on it and hear women gasp and exclaim, "Look at the size of that thing!" And it takes pretty good pictures too! Last weekend, we had an indoor birthday party for one of my sons, and I had that camera/lens combination with the 580EX flash on top. I heard a bunch of wisecracks...but not afterwards when I presented a bunch of the parents with some nice pictures of their kids. Then they couldn't thank me enough!

I think what surprised me most is that I was shooting with the 24-70 at first, and I have nothing but good things to say about that lens. I switched over to the 70-200 near the end of the party, and when I was post-processing the pictures, the 70-200 shots were just more vivid and lively. I just don't think to use it for indoor shooting very often (except indoor sports). You'll be very happy with this lens, and you'll have a bunch of new buttons to play with on the lens that you've never had before!

Guilty as charged. Now let me go search the couch cushions for change to see if I can afford hot dogs for the family tonight. The good news is I will be able to take great photos of those hot dogs with my 85L that just came in. :p
