Yeah! tell me about it! the way I figure it, it takes over 100 hours just to figure out what programs I'm missing and what settings are screwy. It's all worth it in the end though! :D

No no, lol, the stuff after fixing up the new motherboard and graphic card is easy, almost took off half the thermal paste on the processor cooling fan, that seriously would have made my chip crispy, plus my new graphic card is as long as..well from hand to elbow, lol. fragile stuff :X

I keep a notebook of each upgrade and build out. I have built maybe 20 machines in the last 5 years some for friends but many for family as well. It's a very inexpensive way to get a great machine. Anyway, the notebook helps me get all the software in and drivers loaded in the right order. A C drive rebuild takes me maybe a day now with the bulk of the time waiting for everything to load. Heck, MS patches alone is over an hour. :)

Ok, I'm at work, but having a hard time focusing on work. I leave for Florida tomorrow to shoot a couple of days at the track and I keep running over my list of things that I need to do.

There are shortcuts. If you have a SP2 disk, you don't need any of the SP2 updates. If you choose the non-express method and search through the upgrade list for SP3, you can go directly to SP3 and bypass hours of upgrading.

well when I did my upgrade SP3 wasn't out, and I didn't have a disk with SP2 on it. so I was stuck downloading and installing SP2... after that I ordered the free SP2 disk. I suppose I should do the same for SP3.

I should do the same. The SPs do take a lot of time to download.

Hey everybody. I have a bit of a dillema *sp*. I want to become a Dive Con (assistant instructor) and my boss wants me to become one, but I've been thinking about it in more detail and now I'm not so sure. On one hand, I hunger for knowledge involving diving and what better way to learn than to take courses and be an ast. instructor? I think it would advance my diving skills as a diver and a buddy, and I would be doing a LOT of diving. Eventually I could become an instructor (which means I could get into a lot of quarries for free).

On the other hand, some people say that when you enter the field of instructing, it becomes a job instead of a hobby, and I don't want that to happen. I don't know if I really want to become an instructor, which is pretty much the point of being a dive con, The Dive Con course is loooooong and has a long internship. I fear that if I do this I'll end up not having the energy for other things (like working out and photography) and that I might not be able to commit as much time to my school work. I admit that I've fallen behind in my schoolwork, and after I finish up my highschool stuff (very soon hopefully) I've got to get started on college (and I still don't know for sure if I want to major in Biology in order to do Marine Biology). I would also possibly have to instruct certain kids summer scuba camps (called scuba rangers by SSI) thereby further taxing my time.

Between lifeguarding parties on the weekends, schoolwork, housework, photography (very rarely but it's there), video taping my brother's dance lessons (so he can study them afterwards), working out, and working in the store during the week I don't think I'd be able to take on the added responsibilities of dive con. I'd love to be part of the scuba learning experience for new divers but I don't know if I'm ready in terms of proficiency in diving and experience.

The way I see it, for the time being I should work towards my Master Diver certification (which is only 4 dives away) followed by the Century Diver rating (which in 50 dives after Master). I could still work in the store like I am right now, I can keep learning about diving and get other certifications like Fill Station Op., keep guarding on the weekends unless I WANT to go diving, keep working on my school work and still have the time and energy to workout.

My boss wants me to become a dive con but I'm sure he would understand if I tell him that I don't feel ready. I know there will be a good number of other folks in the class but I don't know if he will be hiring any of them. I'm not sure what is required to maintain a dive con certification but I'll be talking with him about this tomorrow evening.

I'd just like to get some other opinions on what I could/should do. So what do y'all think?

Well it sounds like you have the whole decision under control. This is one of those life decisions where you need to just make it and be happy with your choice. I love programming, and when I went from doing it as a 'hobby' aka just-for-fun to having to do it every day for work. it did change, however it is still 'fun' I don't do much in my free time as I used to. but that is all fine with me, i have plenty of other hobbies that I can spend my time with. I have several sets of analog multiple choice decision making devices if you need me to roll one for you I will. but it would probably (no pun intended) be better for you to figure it out on your own.

that's my 2c.

ahh, I didn't think of that. I shouldn't be surprised. I bought mine from the interweb... anyway, I totally understand about the fan being loud! I've had one that sounded like a jet engine taking off when you turned it on LOL! it was pretty funny. but I got used to it.
