Does the 1D-series improve AF speed & accuracy even w/slow lenses?

Dear ALL,
i was wondering if a 1D-series body improve AF speed & accuracy of zoom lenses slower than f2.8 like the 24-85(28-105)/3.5-4.5 or the 28-135/3.5-5.6 due to 1D-series AF modules.

i'm using 5D and the AF module wasn't any better than the XXD bodies (or so i read many a times). i'm quite happy with the 24-85/3.5-4.5 and thought of spending the next budget on a used 1D2 instead of a 24-70L.

Thanks

first off i would spend the money on new glass rather than a new body...glass is very important in IQ...

There is no comparison to the 1D autofucus capabilities. Even the old 1D Classic is better than any other Canon body. I thought the 40D did pretty good, but after owning both for a year now, nope, the 1D is always the winner.

Yes it does, especially if you use the centre point focus point. The 5D has a notoriously bad autofocus system considering it's a pro camera. I ditched the AF on mine and bought the manual focus screen instead.

Absolutely, 1 Series are phenomenal. I started with a 10D, went to 20D, bought the 30D, bought a 1D Mark III, then a 40D, sold the 40D to pick up a used Mark II N. I loved the thought of the prosumer models for remote shooting, but after many years of doing this the only other Canon I will purchase will be the 5D Mark II for wedding work. I am disappointed that Canon didn't change the AF system in the 5D, but I really never had any problems with the 5D's autofocus.

I would take 24-70mm f2.8 with 5d over 1d and crappy glass. And I shoot with 1dmk2.

yes, the accuracy will definitely be higher. As for speed, that's debatable. In poor conditions it might hunt a bit less due to the extra sensitivity of the 1-series AF systems, but in good light you may not notice a speed difference.

As others have stated... absolutely yes. The AF on the 1D (including the Classic) is far better than of the other bodies. I had a 1D classic and the crappy 28-80 focused much better. I shot quite a bit with the nifty fifty and found it did remarkably well too.

Its an across the board upgrade with the autofocus system. Higher quality lenses will yield overall better IQ images (regardless of the body), but you would see a pretty good difference in AF tracking and capabilities with any of the 1D series bodies.

Thanks to ALL who contributed.

i'm having a 35/2, 85/1.8 and a 24-85/3.5-4.5 with a 5D. So far the EF24-85/3.5-4.5 has the best cost-to-performance ratio i've seen so far in all the zooms i've owned or rented.

It was annoying to see many of my pics not up to par becos of missed-focusing on the point of interest. i'm mostly taking family photos and the occasional weddings for friends and relations. i've went through 28-70L, 24-70L, 35L, 35/2, 28/1.8, 28-105/3.5-4.5 and 24-85/3.5-4.5 plus 28-135/3.5-5.6 and what i saw in my final resizing and even at 100% when editing was that all these lenses are good for what i normally do.

That's why my contemplation is to get a 1D-series body first so as to keep using the lenses. i thought it will be very wasteful to spend on a sharp L prime/zoom when the camera could be better in nailing the right focus.

Rgds

I agree, if the picture is out of focus, it doesn't matter how nice the lens is.

Better lenses may equate to better pictures, but you still need to nail the focus, or its a moot point.
