If you're in the area, check out the Houston (MN) International Festival of Owls, coming in March. They have two dedicated owl photography sessions (external link) where you can photograph various species of owl up close and with nice perches and backgrounds. It's really a great opportunity to practice your skills and get some nice shots, and socialize with other photographers. The proceeds from the photography session fee goes to worthy organizations like the Raptor Education Group (external link), and Houston Nature Center (external link).

I used to rehab injured owls in the US, WAY before I got into photography, and I am constantly longing just to step back in time with my 100-400 and some tubes!

That's a really nicely framed shot Liz!

We have a Barn Owl, Great Horned Owl, and European Eagle Owl at the centre I volunteer at and they're just awesome birds. Below are photos of Alexandria and Seamus at the Toronto Sportsmens Show this past year.

Those are real beauties! The eagle owls are huge aren't they? I can see how they got their name. They had one at the owl festival, it was a female named "Xena" and she looked the part!

Yes, it was cool to see many of our native owls, but also some European species like the tawny owl and eagle owl. We don't get to see those too often!

Thanks for the heads up. I think I might have to take a drive up there. Are there lots of eagles around that time of year? Thanks again...Jeff

Typically there are eagles along the Mississippi River, especially by the locks and dams. Also some good shooting in La Crosse, if the conditions are right.

Nice shots , We are seriously thinking about signing up for the Owl festival photo session, by the looks of your shots it looks well worth it. Have always wanted to get some good Owl shots.

They do a great job of setting the owls up on a nice perches with pleasing backgrounds. It's fun and also helps contribute to raptor organizations. Definitely worth it, I'll be back for 2009.
