There is loads of room for your camera and lens attached. Before I bought my 50D I had a gripped xti, 17-55 with hood. I just simply reversed the hood, and placed the xti with lens attached straight down so that the external pocket was facing me. I still had loads of room for the flash, kitlens, and energizer charger (for flash batteries). There was definitely room for a telephoto in the other compartment (which I'm planing for spring of next year). I tried the 5MDH but it was too tight for what I wanted.

thanks for the reply wytwolf. when you said putting the camera "straight down", does that mean the lens is at the floor of the camera and the LCD of the camera is staring up at you?

Yes, I have a 40D and that's how mine is placed in the bag.

I mean everything should technically fit. I'll post a picture of my bag later. I basically have

40d gripped + 17-40L
kenko tubes
100mm macro
70-200 with hood
430 ex
misc stuff

all in one bag.

with my present configuration and equipment, the 6MDH is a perfect fit. but it is only the 18-55 IS that is on the camera right now. the 55-250/85/50 mms are in different compartments. i was just wondering where exactly in the bag to put the gripped xti with a new 17-55 (hoping!). im sure everything will fit nicely :)
