My question is I suppose very basic. Is a Hoya Skylight filter the same as a Hoya UV filter? If it is the same why the different names? Also finally, what does pitch 0.75 mean which is printed on the filters case? Thanks for your help.

It is a well known fact that mounting filters increases your risk of flare or unwanted reflections in your camera. Usually occurs when you shoot to close to a light source (like the sun). The more glass/air interface in the lightpath to the CCD, the more likely flare becomes. Multicoated filters and lenses may subdue flare, but can only do so much.

Any light entering the camera from beyond its field of view can also rob your images of contrast, it can even occur when the bright sources are all behind you.

Shading the lens from stray light remains the definitive solution. Getting yourself a lensshade is the best answer.
