Can anyone recommend the "basic" studio equipment required to take descent photographs of children such as flash units, backgrounds, softboxes etc. Any help would be much appreciated.

I am not a professional but enjoy snapping pictures and would like to have a little studio for the same purpose you listed (photos of friends and family). Is there a company that supplies a decent (not too expensive) intro lighting kit? Since I have no intention of doing this for money I don't think I need "professional/industrial grade". 4Bucks does not = photo for $... Four Buckleys in the family
