does the old sigma 14 3.5 beat the canon 17-40L?

just need a wide lens for traveling~
need the wide side~
so compare the 14 to 17
just compare the photo quality
i know 14<17 :)

Assuming (from other posts) you're using the 5D (i.e. 'full-frame' format), the 17-40L will be far more suitable as a travel wideangle than the extreme and fixed 14L. I know I'm not answering your stated question, but you would feel in almost all cases that the 14L would be too wide. For most travel shots I would expect you'd be looking for 24-35mm on FF.
