Can you tell if an image is truly in focus with the new 3.0-inch Clear View LCD (920,000 dots) monitor on the 50D camera, or do you still have to check on a computer monitor screen? I haven't had a chance to hold one yet.
Thanks in advance.

I tried a 50D the other day, and the screen is really, really good - it's much better for checking focus than any other Canon screen I've seen; miles better than my 5D.

Having said that, it's still better to check on a monitor for fine detail, exact focus, subtle camera shake etc.

No, even with that LCD, if the image is taken from the preview jpg as it was in all other cameras, then the increased resolution is absolutely meaningless.
If the image is taken directly from the RAW file or the actual jpg, then there may be an increase

Is that how the live view works? By continually writing and rewriting jpeg thumbnails?

not at all, OP's question was checking focus, which means checking the picture after it is taken for proper focus. Live View is a different scheme all together.

The pics can look stunning on the LCD and then pretty ordinary on the PC. Best to check on PC before committing to anything.

I wonder how much of this is the actual LCD and how much is software.

I had a Rebel XS, which has the low res 2.5" LCD screen (like the 30D and 5D screen) yet I've never seen a camera that showed so much detail when zoomed in all the way. It was absolutely amazing for checking focus. Much better than my D700 and it's VGA screen.

Now I haven't used the 50D, but I would hope that it's comparable.
