So I got a couple pocket wizards, an umbrella, have my 580EX on a light stand, and decided to try a little off camera lighting. Here are a few of my daughter flash into a shoot through umbrella at camera left about 12" above subject.
There are a few more on my blog = http://www.brianpalmerphotography.blogspot.com (external link)

Let me know what you think....

They both look a little dark on my monitor, the first one especially. In the first one her hair is completly blocked up in shadow and I see no detail.

What settings were you using on the flash?

The flash was on 1/16th power in manual mode and on the first and 1/8th on the second. any suggestions for getting detail in the hair without her face out? I'll give it another shot tomorrow.

On the first one you can go a lot higher in power before the face will blow out. The second is closer, but still has room.

It isn't just that the hair is blocked up, they both look underexposed in general including the face. Note how the whites of her eyes are a bit grey in the second shot. Use the histogram and make sure white tones are white.

Nice poses, BTW. I think this shoot has a lot of potential.

Thanks Jeffery, didn't even notice the whites of the eyes being grey.

I played a little last night with the same setup so I'll toss a couple more up, I got to get the fear of overexposing out of my head...I think that's why I tend to underexpose.
