But it's not what you think, it's a Tokina 400mm 5.6 AT-X SD that I bought used here on the boards. On initial review it's surprisingly not as big as I thought it was going to be, still long but not overly big in diameter. The AF motor is a bit loud and a little clunky (I wasn't expecting USM on a lens over 10 years old though either ;)). I was pleasantly surprised that my 1.4x Kenko still allows it to AF on my XTi, only reporting 5.6 and 400mm

Enough with the blabbing, here is a shot from it yesterday. 400mm ISO200 f/10 1/80s (mounted on tripod)

I will have to see if this beats my 200L with a 2x attached :)

Nice shot there...did you get it at a wildlife park? Would like to go for one of these things some day. It'd be nice to see some 100% crops from that photo to judge what the quality is like.

I'm using some 1960s Leica 400mm f/5 lens myself, weighs a tonne and all manual.

You caught me, it was in a zoo :o. Bet you couldn't tell that from the photo though!

Here's a 100% crop of the above shot

Nice shot Tony - no I couldn't tell it was in a zoo, it just made me think MN actually has wolves. :) Glad to see you're enjoying the lens. Now I'm jealous for it again, haha. ;) I only sold it because I needed the money and hadn't managed to use it alot. I hope you use it more than I did. Pretty nice build quality, eh? It really is the most bang for your buck in a Canon-mount supertelephoto lens, for sure. Too bad it's so rare.

I'm curious to see how your 200/2.8 + pro 2X TC compares. I found my 70-200/4L IS + Kenko Pro 300 DG 2X TC to be just as sharp I think but of course darker and unable to autofocus. :(

Cheers,
Lincoln :)

Pretty nice shot. I was thinking about getting a 400 also. But my 200 with a 2X has given me some great shots. Under curtain conditions of course. But great none the less.

It's fortunate you have these guys in a zoo, especially in what looks like an outdoor enclosure. The partial shape of a building in the background sorta gave it away, but nevertheless a much nicer picture than I would have been able to achieve of the same animal in say, an enclosed temperature-regulated area.

How much did you pay for the lens? Looks like the wolf created a little motion blur in your photo. The darn things never sit still for long.

Really a great lens

It has "almost" the quality of the 400mm f/5.6L and is lighter and focuses closer than the "L" lens. The autofocus is not quite as quick as the f/5.6L but, few lenses are.

I used one for years and it is a neat lens at a great price...
