I had a similar situation. I had a 1D and a 40D, and the wife really started getting into photography. So I gave her the 40D/17-55 IS combo and after a day, she told me that it was too heavy for her and gave it back. She went back to using the G9.

My advice would be to hold off for now, give her the 20D to try out and see if she gets bitten by the bug.

She know's it's heavy, but she's a tough broad and actually thinks the XSi is too light/small/plasticly. She's not a big woman either, but she is so used to my bodies (Elan and 40D) that she really loves the sizes.

For the OP, I'd say give her the 20D and get the 50D for your self. People are really on to something by checking with her to see what she would want.

Canon 50D - 17-55mm F2.8 IS - 300mm F4L IS - 70-200mm F4L IS - 50mm F1.8 - 580EX II & 430EX - Full Gear Listing

Latest update!

I bought the 50D. Last night my wife told me that she was actually excited to start shooting with the 20D!

Yay! I made a decision that didn't turn around and bite me in the behind. :p

So I got a little kit together for her to start playing with.
The 20D, the 18-55 kit lens that came with it, my old 28-105 and my 75-300.
I did warn her about the 75-300 not exactly being Canon's best lens, and it not having IS.
Who knows? Maybe she'll end up wanting a 70-200 f/4 with IS.

Some people hunt with a gun. I use a Canon.

All I ask is a chance to prove that money can't make me happy.
