New to DSLR photography. Just got the camera last Friday. Many years ago I used to shoot 35mm film on a Rebel G. I decided it was time to get back into it and relearn everything I forgot. I hoping the problem in these pictures is me doing something wrong that I can fix as opposed to a lens problem.

With these shots I was showing my 6 year old daughter why I bought 2 lenses, since she asked. These were intended solely to show her how we can get better pictures at the zoo now, and not intended to be "keepers".

#1 is taken with the kit 18-55IS, and #2 is with the 55-250IS, both on the XSi/450D, no filters used. Out of 30 shots I got 4 or 5 that had this kind of problem. Full automatic mode, no real setup. What is causing the horizontal break in the picture? Do I have a problem with the lenses or the user? I'm OK with either answer, I just want to fix the problem.

I only have the one, a Transcend 8G HDSC. But I can easily get another card tomorrow and try it.

Absolutely not a lens problem. Almost certainly a memory card fault. Possibly an electronic fault in the camera. Try that new card and see how you get on.

i have seen this problem before and it wasn't a card problem, it was a body problem. it happened like a couple of times every 1000 shots and it was a nikon body.
Check the new card and you will be sure, but sure it is not a lens problem.

looks very similar to this: http://joebloggs.servebeer.com/odd_files/IMG_1573s.jpg (external link)
which was a problem I had with my 20D - caused by a faulty memory card, replaced card & never saw the problem again.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Hi,

How do the images appear on the camera's LCD? Okay?

If so, it could also be the method or devices you are using to download the images to your computer.

Personally I prefer to use a card reader and not download from the camera. I started seeing some corrupted files when I connected the card reader differently, to a hub on a new monitor rather than directly to the computer's USB port. From all I've been able to find out, it shouldn't really make any difference, but it did. Since going back to a more directly connected USB cable for the card reader, I no longer have had any corrupted files.

Also, did you format the card in-camera before using it?

I've never used Transcend cards, so can't say good or bad about them. You might be able to find out more about them with a search. I'm currently using Lexar, Sandisk and Sony memory cards without any issues (other than the occasional user error). Some of them are over 4 years old now, and still work fine.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Happy to hear it may be a simple fix. I got a PNY 4G on the way in to work this morning. I won't get to try it until tonight. Would have purchased a Sandisk (use those for my laptop), but the store didn't have any.

Joseph - could not get to your link from work. Will try from home later.

amfoto1 - The pictures look fine on the LCD. I also used the built-in card reader of my laptop to transfer the pictures. The problem existed on the card itself. Did format the card, but only after I saw the problem.

I'll report back tonight.

Is 8GB considered big? I use 16 and have never had a problem like that. What exactly is the relationship between card size and this problem?

wow. lucky you, not for him. its personal preference, times like this i can't afford to loose image because of a bad 8GB car. you know for example you've travel to hawaii w/ ur 16GB card by the time you got home and upload your photos you found out that some of your best shots were corrupt. would you go back to hawaii and re do the shoot? for my preference i carry 3 2gb, 2 4gb, and a couple of 1gb. mainly because of this reason. and its not that heavy.
ps, dnt loose your 16gb.=D

I've only taken it out of my camera once! I've read a lot more about bent pins from swapping cards than corrupt cards. 8GB is probably going to be considered tiny in a year.
