You can read about CHKD FAQ if you like..

http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ (external link)

Basically Canon disables some of the features of the DIGIC Image Processor for their compact cams, such as RAW, live histogram. CHKD is a program that is stored in the SD card that can unlock features, plus the program can run scripts that can do bracket shooting, time lap photography and all sort of cool stuffs.

I attach a shot of the LCD with the CHKD loaded, from the top you can see the extra icons: time, MB of memory left, battery usage percent, zoom range, live histogram, and shooting RAW.

Ok I need help. I for the life of me cannot get this to work on my camera. I have installed the diskboot.bin file onto my 4gb sd card and have even tried locking the card and nothing comes up or see any way to start up the chdk. I have gone into all the menus and see nothing different. I have even tried reformatting the card and still nothing. How did you guys get this to work?

Perry, yeah, the coolest part is that it's free :)

Neemo6, I use the Card Trick v1.41 to prepare my card, everything is pretty straight forward, just follow the instruction under FAG on "How do I get CHDK onto my camera's SD memory card?"

Ok, this could be fun! My little 590 is about to get a boost!

Question: (probably first of many...) when I shut the camera off, I lose the CHDK features? If I do shut the camera off ( I do this often) and lose the CHDK features, do I have to do the whole installation process over again at my computer? I don't leave my camera on all the time. Again, I have the 590IS.

No, you would not loose the CHDK after restartting the camera. The installing procedure asks to lock the card up before inserting into the card slot, so you will not be to format the card in camera, but still can write and erase the images. In fact, if the card is not lock, the CHDK will not load.

What I do is that I use one of the SD cards that has CHDK loaded when I feel like playing, rest of the card will just load and operate normally.

Thanks Lotto. Appreciate your response.
Now, all I need do is get to a computer that has one of those card reader slots. Time to call my son.

Good idea to have two cards. One for playing and one for "work?" Is that what I do with my camera? Work? It's all play to me!

Great forum and you all have helped me a great deal with taking pictures. My family says I'm getting better because they see more faces instead of backs and not so much of our Michigan sky in the pics....

After it's loaded, press the Print button (top right on the back), then the Menu button, that would bring up the CHDK menu. You will find all kind of setting in there. Have fun!
