The guy being tackled, Trent Hentschel, kicked the ball across his body as he was brought down.
The weight of his body all went onto his right knee and ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament requiring a full knee reconstruction.
In addition the knee was dislocated and the leg fractured.
This photo is of that exact nano-second. Note the distortion and bulging in the knee.
The shot is part of a sequence of 6 or 7
The extent of the injury was likened to that of a road accident victim.
He has undergone extensive rehab and two years down the track still has not played at the top level.
The local paper was going to run this pic on the front page but it was decided it was too graphic for the FP and they ran it on the back page instead and have run it several times since.
Several ortopaedic surgeons have also bought this photo as well.
BTW the pic was taken from my seat in the crowd using a 10D with 100-400L Series.

Update: Feb 21, 2009
Trent Hentschel returned to the top level of AFL today in a pre season competition match against Geelong.
It has been a long hard road for Hentschel since the injury with a couple of hamstring strains in 2008 related to the knee injury slowing the process.
It has taken 30 months of rehabilitation for his leg to be strong enough for the return.
At the time of the injury he was aged 23. He is now 26.
