Freakishly sharp 16-35 II > 14mm II

I picked up a Canon 14mm II thinking that it would replace my 16-35 II that I absolutely love. Only reason why I'm thinking of getting rid of the 16-35 is because the 14mm is because I mostly shoot at the wider end when using the 16-35 plus the 14mm is slightly smaller and from the reviews it's suppose to be sharper. My simple focus tests shows the 14mm being worse not only in the corners but also in the center. I know this isn't very scientific but for this test I used my 1DsMKIII on a tripod with remote shutter release. Pics below were imported into LR, cropped 100%, and exported as jpg's. From the pics you can easily tell that the 16-35 is noticeably sharper. Did I receive a bad copy of the 14mm or do I own a freakishly sharp 16-35? I did a similar test with my 24L and the 16-35 beat it too! I don't know if I should feel happy or sad about these results. I'm going to return the 14mm but my question is should I bother exchanging it and try another copy or just be happy and stick with the 16-35.

14mm II, f/2.8, cropped 100%

You sure the prime is focused correctly?

absolutely! i took 5-6 shots and they were all the same. i even tried live view/manual focus and results were similar to auto focus.

Have you tried shooting at an f-stop other than 2.8 and not cropping? What happened then?

I would guess your 14mm is defective. Forget sharpness, the focus just appears off to me.

Here are a few more I took this morning. I even tried micro adjusting the 14mm. Am I expecting too much out of the 14? I hope these images aren't too big.

Your zoom is cherry in the corners, man. I'm sending mine in before the year is up for calibration and I hope it comes back that good.

Something wrong with your 14 Id say.

Heres a quick shot with mine. 1DsII, 14II, ISO 100, f2.8, handheld 1/6 (not the best time, but still check out the sharpness). No sharpening applied, just resized with PS.

Well to be fair the zoom came back from Canon about 2 weeks back for calibration. Thumbs up to the techs at Canon. :)

Shuko, looks like you have a great copy! Your pictures in the other thread is one of the reasons why I picked up the 14. ;)

Not that I expect to get the exact same tech and service, but which center did you send it to, if you don't mind?
