the 85 1.8 is my main basketball lens.

i use the 85 1.8 and the 70-200 or if im feeling adventurous...a 300 f/2.8 on the second body.

tonite made me realize i need to upgrade my 1D mk1 to a 1Dmk2/mk2N or a 1Dmk3.

yikes!

just got back from covering the Candlelight Vigil for Asa Yama****a. it was amazing how many people fit into the waianae hs cafe. this incident really shook up the community...she was a big influence in the hs and to its students.

So I talked to one of the admissions people at work today and they asked me if I wanted to do another shoot for the promotional stuff (brochures, flyers, etc.) so I have something to plan for now. I did the first shoot back in Oct '07 with some students and they used the pics all over the place, but I really wasn't happy with them so I'm looking forward to re-doing the shoot (I really hate looking at all those junk pics all over the place).

If you're interested in checking out some of the first pics, you can see a lot of them in the catalog here (external link). Not all the pics are mine, but the cover was mine and about half of the stuff inside. We shot at Island Pacific Academy where we hold some classes as well as the Kapolei Library (right next door to IPA and the Bank of Hawaii building right across the street.

We had to use a makeshift backdrop with some ugly white dropcloth from Home Depot the last time but I just ordered this background support system (external link) so now I'll have a white muslin and backdrop stand to use. I also bought a blue chromakey muslin that came in the other day so I can try that out. I'm hoping to get some practice in before the shoot, but they're planning to do it early next month so I don't have a lot of time.

Basically I'm looking for suggestions on improving. Some of the shots are definitely going to be set up with the intention of removing the background. I figure I'm going to use either the white or the chromakey with a couple of background lights (probably my 580 and 430) with my AB800 as the key light with my strip light softbox and possibly a reflector or another 430 with umbrella for fill. If we use the same room we did last time I should have plenty of room to move the model 6 feet away from the BG and both muslins are 10x24 feet so there's a lot of BG to work with. Anything I'm missing? If I need to order anything else I need to do it soon because there's not a whole lot of time left. I may also ask to borrow one or two cybersyncs from someone if I go with more than 3 lights.

They haven't finalized it all yet, but I'm relatively sure it's going to happen so I'm trying to prep now. Any suggestions are welcome.

You can use my AB gear and modifiers if you want. Maybe we can setup the next POTN meet on Sat, 21 March. That way you can get some practice in and use one of our many good looking models...lol

I have no experience with this type of shooting so I really have no suggestions for you...but I think it's cool you have this opportunity. And you can borrow my CyberSyncs and Speedlites if you need them.

Another meet? That would be cool.

Wow you are going much further into your next shoot. We do need a meet so you can practice setting up and shooting. Take as much stuff as you can so you won't be short of anything. I'll give you a hand if I'm available that day.

Cool, March 21 sounds good to me. If we'll be using AB's it easier if we use a place that we can plug them into, unless you want to give your battery pack a real test.

Yep, that is me. I had to wait for the rebates to end so I could sell them easier.

Thanks, guys, I really appreciate the help. Unfortunately I can't on the 21st--I have a 1st birthday party that day. I could probably do it after 3pm, though. I don't know if David was interested in this one, but that's also the weekend of the Kunia Orchid Show so I don't know if he'd be busy.

I'm free next weekend (3/14 and 15), on 3/22, and on 3/28 and 29 the following week.

My background stand and white muslin should be arriving next Thursday. That NAPP shipping discount saved me 60 bucks (I bought a Pelican case too).

Thanks for all the help. It's good to have a lot of expert consultants :).

On a side note, Shon and Barry (or anyone else interested in guns and knives)--if you didn't know, the Hawaii Historic Arms Association Gun and Knife Show is this weekend at the Blaisdell. The show usually isn't that great, but I'll be going down at least one day since I promised some makers that I would go visit. A couple of collectors have a lot of good stuff on display too and everyone's good to talk to. I missed September's one because they made it a week earlier than usual.
