Interesting news Fedka - thanks for sharing. I'm still on CS3 though using whatever ACR ver came bundled with that. I'm just wondering if ACR 5.2 has full compatibility with CS3 then and won't cause me any aggravation. I didn't see anything in the Adobe notes. - Stu

No, the Adobe Camera Raw 5.x series is not compatible with Photoshop CS3; it will only work in Photoshop CS4.

The latest ACR version for CS3 is 4.6.

So how does the Targeted Adjustment Tool work? I'm assuming it allows one to do localised changes on an image, right? This would probably be the only feature I would find useful in CS4 and right now I'm not sure if it's worth upgrading over. I'm currently on CS3.

Adobe really needs to check these updates more carefully....there have been too many screw-ups recently.

If you go to the Camera Raw Update page (external link) you can get the ACR update just fine (a 40 MB download).

But if you go to the New Downloads (external link) page (where all the cumulative updates are usually linked) the Windows download is 70.5 MB and complete wrong. I'm guessing its a 64-bit update.

Also, the usual packaging of the DNG Converter with the ACR plug-in is not available although its labeled as such. The DNG Converter has to be downloaded separately from the DNG update (external link) page.

Output sharpening for print or screen output

hmmmm I can't seem to find this.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

I read where they were releasing this but I didn't think so soon. Hope they fixed the few bugs from 5.1.

Thanks

This is a tool we've had in LR since version 1.

The way it works is certian adjustments have this tool (saturation, hue, tone, etc.) These work across the entire image, localised to certain colors or tones (highlights, darks, mid-tones, etc.) but NOT localised to a specific area (that's where we use the brush tools in LR.)

One example of its use is to selectively boost saturation... for example the leaves of a fall tree could be made up of a combination of colors (yellow with a tinge of green.) You'd click the tool, click the area with the colors you want to adjust, and while clicking drag the mouse up or down you'll see the appropriate mix of sliders (yellow and green in this case) move in differing amounts. Boom... you've enhanced those shades (across your entire image) in the proper amounts quite easily without having to fiddle with the color mix yourself or just boosting saturation across the entire image.

Another quick explanation (about its use in LR 1) here: http://www.oreillynet.com …ted_adjustment_tools.html (external link)

Thanks David. So I presume this feature isn't available on ACR 4.6 in CS3? Are there any other features exclusive in LR which are not present in CS3's ACR?

I don't use CS3, so someone correct me if I'm wrong about this; but I don't think Virtual Copies, snapshots, the graduated filter, and the adjustment brushes work in CS3.

I don't use CS4 either, but I believe they now have the adjustment brushes, Graduated filter, and snapshots with the latest ACR; not sure about Virtual copies.

Then there's the updated camera matching profiles, which IMO were a KEY improvement for ACR. I think the beta versions may have worked with CS3... not sure about the 'final' ones released with ACR 5.2.

I was on the phone with Adobe this morning...

I had to order a CS4 upgrade. I just purchased CS3 a couple months ago. Luckily they gave me a nice discount ontop of the upgrade price. I was gonna be really upset to have to upgrade twice! Upgrade for the suite starts at like $499!!!!!!!!

CS3 ACR 4.6 will NOT support the 5DmkII. This is an immediate issue for me as Bridge is a major part of my workflow. And with the 5DmkII coming tomorrow or friday...I need compatibility!

I don't use them myself, but here's a quick explanation:
http://blogs.oreilly.com …shots-are-my-history.html (external link)

After reading that, makes me want to play around with it. It seems almost to be like a Virtual Copy (a way to save multiple states of an image), but without having the seperate images shown in the library.

It appears the main purpose is to be during editing to create "snapshot" of a state of the image you like (perhaps after tweaking the color, but before cropping to various sizes) so you can quickly return to that state if desired without wading through the history.

Thanks David. It could be handy at times, mostly I don't mess with things too much but occasionally I get a cool effect that I don't know how I got it i'd like to save.
