Hi all, I need some tips on what kind of monopod to use with a 300 2.8.
I have a Manfrotto 680B and a 322RC2 grip.

I really just need suggestions on a head for the monopod that will support the 300.

Depending on your usage, no head or the Manfrotto 234RC swivel head. With the 300 2.8, which has a tripod mounting ring, you don't need a ball head. If you also intend to use it with a ringless lens, mounting the camera to the monopod, look at the 486RC2.

I don't have the 300 yet....lol. Just doing some research. Don't want to not have the right equipment if I ever get this lens.

For sports and motorsport racing, I have my 300 f/2.8 attached directly to the monopod without a head (actually, I have a Wimberley plate on the 300 and a Wimberley clamp on the tripod).

For birds and wildlife, if using a monopod instead of a tripod, I use the Wimberley HD200 gimbal head with the 300 f/2.8.

I do have a Manfrotto 486RC2 head to use with the tripod should the need ever arise but I haven't really had a need to use it yet.

I have the Manfrotto 679B with the 3229 on it and it works great with my 300 attached to it.

I use a basic Manrotto 486 on my 694 monopod, but use a Markins QR-60 clamp.

Shooting motorsports and doing a lot of panning, I need the head because I'm not always using the monopod bolt upright and to adjust the framing by moving my body (as I would have to do if not using a head) would create problems while panning. I'm shooting with a 100-400L IS plus a 1.4x convertor at times.

I've tried using my Markins M10 (normally on my tripod) on the monopod but found there was no advantage.

It all very much depends on the sort of photography each of us does and thus what kit will suit us.

I just whack the 300mm 2.8 straight onto my Gitzo Monopod, no head.
