So I have been looking around for a better lens to replace the focal lengths of my 18-55 kit lens and had a few options. I had it narrowed down to either the 17-40 f/4L and the 17-55 f/2.8. The 17-40 was quite a bit less expensive but I found that it just wasn't going to cover the range I wanted, not to mention I like the larger aperture for low light situations as well as a greater DOF. So, I ended up spending the extra cash and going with the 17-55 although I really wanted to add a red stripe to my collection, lol. It will happen in good time...the 70-200 f/2.8 IS is next on my list :).

Anyways, I am very happy with this lens so far. It is extremely sharp and focus' extremely fast and accurate. Couldn't be more happy. I haven't had too much time with the lens as of yet, but I have a quick sample pic:

This guy was shot in NYC right after I picked up the lens from B&H (cool store BTW). No PP whatsoever.

Good score on the lens. I have the same one and several that you own as per your signature. Your new purchase was great. The EF-S 17-55 is actually an L lens but can't be marketed as an L because it won't fit all the cameras in the Canon line up. This is what I was told by a Canon rep last weekend. Sample picture was sharp even though it was back lit. Enjoy the glass.

I have been told the same about the L story. As for the sameple pic, I used the pop-up flash on my cam to fill in a bit because I was shooting into the sun. Is that what you meant by backlit?

Yes, the main light source was the sun and was casting a dark shadow onto the front of the bird. It was still dark even though you used fill flash. Are you sure the flash activated ? Usually with fill flash at that distance the bird will come out over exposed.

The bird was approx 4 feet away and I am pretty sure the flash fired. I think I can see a refelection in the birds eye.

Forget about how much you paid for it...just think how much you'll make WITH IT!

Great lens choice. Congrats.

Just curious as to why yours was being serviced? I am planning on putting a UV filter on ASAP.

I hope I can start making some money with it at some point. I am still in the hobby stage of the game.
