Not to rain on the parade, but it was in to fix the IS fault that develops (I've heard some others have a similar issue, but not sure exactly how wide spread).

I bought mine two years ago, and discovered the dust issue since. Had it cleaned under warranty and then slapped a UV filter, which stops 99% of those issues (but if I ever take it off, it can get dust inside within minutes). I started cleaning it myself, until I managed to strip one of the screws holding it in place, requiring a service (and had it cleaned while it was in). But it came back with a Autofocus drive fault, so eventually it went back (at my cost). Then the IS start 'shunting' in the viewfinder, and generally acting up, so back it went (again at my cost). I tried to have the loose zoom ring fixed too, but they didn't seem to do anything about it.

It's the lens I hate to love. It's build leaves a lot to be desired, but the pictures and versatility are great. Just keep an eye out for the IS and the dust.

Thank you. I appreciate the heads up!

Love this lens. I agree with the posts above on adding a UV filter, this one is dust magnet.

So I have been looking around for a better lens to replace the focal lengths of my 18-55 kit lens and had a few options. I had it narrowed down to either the 17-40 f/4L and the 17-55 f/2.8. The 17-40 was quite a bit less expensive but I found that it just wasn't going to cover the range I wanted, not to mention I like the larger aperture for low light situations as well as a greater DOF. So, I ended up spending the extra cash and going with the 17-55 although I really wanted to add a red stripe to my collection, lol. It will happen in good time...the 70-200 f/2.8 IS is next on my list :).

Anyways, I am very happy with this lens so far. It is extremely sharp and focus' extremely fast and accurate. Couldn't be more happy. I haven't had too much time with the lens as of yet, but I have a quick sample pic:

This guy was shot in NYC right after I picked up the lens from B&H (cool store BTW). No PP whatsoever.

Wow.. that's a funny looking duck! Great lens choice though, congrats!
