My fiance wants to give her mom a print of her and her siblings when they were young for christmas. This is the only photo she could get her hands on and it isnt in the best shape. Problem is, i am horrible at this type of editing. She is hoping to have some color put back in the picture and to have it cleaned up a bit. if anyone is bored and would like to help, i would greatly appreciate it. if anyone can produce an edited photo that my fiance wants, i will gladly send you a free 8x12 print of your choice from my website ( www.justinunderwater.com (external link) ). Thanks!

below is a sized version of the picture. the full-sized picture can be found at: http://www.justinunderwater.com …ums/Admin/Ali_Mom_Pic.jpg (external link)

Able to convert it to pretty clean B&W and cleaned up spots and such but I honestly don't know what to do about the vertical pattern which (I guess) comes from being in an old fashioned photo album where the page was ribbed.

I'm having a crack at the lines.

Here is my try. A lot of scan lines?

Great job with the colour, rw2. I didn't have any luck with the lines; I tried selecting the individual lines, using that as a selection for a layer mask on a brightness adjustment. It helped somewhat but gave a bit of an unpleasant look. Nothing I would consider acceptable.

You still have some time.
If the vertical lines are not present on the image, perhaps you can get a better scan.

I'll wait for the official verdict from the OP but I'm fairly certain those lines are not from scanning but due to the album which held this photo.

Older albums had semi adhesive, ribbed pages with acetate over them. I think the ribbing was to allow you to be able to get a finger nail under the image so you could lift and reposition it if you wanted.

To get rid of the lines, you should use something like a fourier transform plugin. A quick google gave me: http://www.lunacore.com/blog/?p=87 (external link)
