Can you take a close up shot of it so we can all see it for ourselves? You sure it says "9999"?

Interesting indeed. For those wondering about Canon lens dates see http://the-digital-picture.com …ses/Canon-Lens-Aging.aspx (external link)

Bryan at TDP does mention this though: "The first two numbers, "09", is the month number the lens was manufactured in. Month 02 is February, month 11 = November. The leading zero of the month code is sometimes omitted."

I wonder if your lens is made in Sept of 2007. When did you buy it? I wonder if the first "9" is supposed to be an "omission" and hence the second "9" is the actual month of Sept.

Regardless, this is a first time for me seeing anything of this sort.

BTW, regarding your sig:
"Canon 14 F2.8 II, Canon 28 1.8, Canon 35 1.2L, Canon 50 1.2L, Canon 85 1.2L II, Canon 135 1.2 L, Canon 100-400 L"

Canon's 35 L is an f1.4 and their 135 L is an f2 ;)

That date code is fake. Someone tampered with the lens code. All date codes come in white paint, not stamped.

You should also have a black serial number in the silver metal around the mount in black recessed paint.

Paranoid much?

Different lenses have different styles of date codes... I seriously doubt someone faked a date code on a 14L... why?

I doubt it's fake. I've seen black and white date codes. This looks authentic to me.

I think all of the ones on my lenses are stamped. Are all of my lenses fake?

I've owned 5 L lenses all 4 new and 1 refurb., all purchased from reputable well known retailers. All have had the date code in white like the enclosed link. All purchased within the last 10 years.

Stamped codes may indicate a lens that was repaired by Canon. Thus voiding the date of original build. Else how can you explain all 9's. Else someone is hiding the original origins of the lens.

Not saying the lens if fake - but the current date code is meaningless. If you care run the serial number by Canon give them a call.

Not all date codes are white lettering. Some are stamped right at the factory. Doesn't mean that it's been fixed by Canon. I've seen brand new lenses that have a stamped code. The 9999 thing is strange though, and could be a refurb, but all repairs where the mount has been replaced that I've seen, just leave a blank rubber ring, no code at all.
