so i was taking pictures of a bridge, and it has the local power plant behind it, it was a nice sunset, i'm just starting to PP them now, and a cop drives by, ask for my license, and sends the info to homeland security so they have me on file.

I love michigan!

security has tightened around here, since i live on an island, that's a part of michigan, but it's in between michigan and canada, so it doesn't suprise me, but yet it caught me off guard

Surprisingly I've never been stopped by an officer while shooting, even while lugging a tripod over my shoulder down Michigan Ave at night.

A bridge and a power plant in the same shot?

Had you thrown in a Federal Government Building as well, you could have had the OHS "Trifecta..." ;)

Yeah, they are keeping a little closer eye on these things since 9/11...

I'm not surprised it happened in Michigan. Michigan has been voted the most boring state in the union. These guys are probably happy for the excitement.

I put tape on my mirrors so I don't accidentlly walk thru one into another dimension.

You may think it's a joke but you have to understand that security, police, the military and OHS all work under the mindset of "Never Again / Not on My Watch."

The onus (as unfair as it might be) is on photographers to avoid appearing to be doing something illicit or untoward.

And before anyone spouts off, I've read all the posts regarding terrorists using cell phone cameras and not dSLRs with white lenses and 15lb tripods...

You have to pick your battles and if you're just out screwing around taking snapshots in the vicinity of what could be considered a sensitive area, then you do so at your own risk and the smart play is shut it, pack it and move on.

Now if your doing something commercially or the project is going to put food on your table, that's a different argument and you and/or your client should work to obtain permission/access/permits, whatever, in adavnce.

Do you want to be safe or do you want to be free? You can't have both, no matter what they say.

Anyone else think "Homeland" sounds like "Fatherland"?
