Late Wednesday afternoon I found myself in town with a couple of hours to spare (bailed on a vendor's Christmas function) so I thought it was a good opportunity to put my new resolution to be more inspired and motivated into practice. I tried to push myself out of my comfort zone here and try some different things, so they may work and they may not. This is probably my first attempt at anything I'd call 'urban.'

The last one grabs me for what may not be an obvious reason...Desolation!

There's no people... It's like the world ended and no one was left to shop.

I actually find the mixed lighting in #3 kinda cool as well.

Thanks for noticing, on both points! The Hunter St mall is an immensely busy place most of the time, and just happened to be almost deserted when I was there - this is the scene I was trying to convey, and wasn't sure I'd succeeded. If you don't notice that, it's otherwise rather boring.

#3 was massaged quite a bit to bring out the colours. Would have been better as a night time shot, but that's the subject of a future trip.

I like the pedestrian bridge shot Adam, nice composition.

All you need in the last shot is some tumbleweed. lol

Bit late at night, my bad...your good.

the pasta shop refers to the bloke they caught a t Nobbys Head with his whistle in the jar of pasta sauce..

hi adam,

good to hear you're pushing yourself, and i don't think this is a bad first attempt in the urban environment. you'll probably notice that in comparison to other things, it's a little more difficult to shoot, just because there's a lot of clutter to consider.

from these shots you do have compositional know how, so just remember that for any image - no matter what genre - it is a 2 dimensional plane. migrate your knowledge of shapes. however, in the urban environment, just ensure you ask yourself what is it that interests you about a scene and try to convey that. otherwise the photo is just a snapshot with some geometry/symmetry - again, this is more applicable for this genre as we're inured to the environemnt, having to see it everyday.

other then that, definitely keep shooting! :)

I think the tumbleweed is needed in a lot of these. they seem to need pedestrians to give the scenes life
