If I buy a Ryan Howard model bat will I be able to hit like him?

There's many factors in being a professional photographer, and it depends in what type of photography you are speaking of before you, or anyone, can answer if you can get professional level images. The camera is a tool of the trade, it doesn't do the work for you so the answer is simply no - the camera alone won't give you professional results.

...there's way to many factors you need to know and look into before you can answer the question in all honesty. Can a professional user get great shots with it depending on what they're shooting and the knowledge they have - yes. Is it going to meet a lot of needs of clients, not in my field (sports and athletic portraits) and probably not others like commercial and such. It really depends on first the user and then what they're trying to shoot.

It depends on what professional aspects you are looking for.

A Rebel XT will have most of the options that a higher priced camera will have, but just not to the same level/quality.

It will let you be creative and create some great photos. Its a good camera to learn on and if you have been using a point and shoot, you will see the big step in difference.

I searched some photos taken with an XTI on devArt - http://www.deviantart.com/#order=9&q=rebel+xt (external link)
They look good.

Once you have learned and got all you can out of the camera, you will look to step up to a higher priced camera.

The XT is capable of taking excellent pictures. The end result has more to do with the quality of lens used and your understanding of composition and exposure.

People upgrade for features. As you move up the product line you get easier to use controls--faster autofocus--higher frame rates--more durable construction---and in many cases upgrades are driven more by want than need.

A search throughout this forum will show the XT can product outstanding results, on par with a 30D. A good lens will make a much bigger difference in results. To answer your question, I don't think you can purchase your way to great pictures. A great shot with an XT and kit lens will be better than a poor shot with more expensive gear.
