I've posted this in another forum, but would be grateful for any opinions here. Maybe Usenet news had its advantages, after all!

---

So I have decided I can justify a new digital to myself. Just one, mind. I am focused on a Disneyworld holiday in summer '09, but a camera is for life, nit just summer holidays.

I have a 350D, which I use for stage photography and other occasions when I want the picture to be good and am willing to make an effort. But it's a heck of a weight to consider carrying around in the Florida summer sunshine for two weeks.

My other camera is an Ixus860IS, which I wear on a belt pouch and goes with me everywhere. It's surprisingly all right, given its size, but it has a limited range and certainly has room for IQ improvement. It's still a great little toy.

The 860 came in the wake of the death of my Pro1, a camera that I loved but died in the Taiwanese humidity and rain :-(

Anyway, I am now torn between the G10 and the SX1.

The G10 appeals to my puritan, Pro1-owning side. Gorgeous image quality, and as Robert Deutsch has shown, possibly even of peripheral use in stage photography. But limited zoom range, no zoom while videoing and, in terms of features, not hugely more advanced than the 860IS. Will I feel as if I've spent a lot and gained little in return?

Alternatively, there's the SX1IS. Awesome zoom range, and 1080 video to fit in with that HDTV I bought recently. OTOH, I have been very aware of chromatic aberration (sp?) in pictures I've seen from the SX10. Would that annoy me in real life? I can be pretty picky about such things, and I find it hard to resist pixel peeping. And how often is the air clear enough to use that 560mm equivalent lens anyway, without moisture in the air causing distortion?

Any thoughts?

regards,
/alan
