Thumbnails don't show a preview of images with 40D+ RAW images(14-bit images) in Windows explorer. Just shows an icon.

I've searched around here for a solution. I tried the ArcSoft RAW thumbnail viewer plug-in... didn't do anything. I tried Canon's RAW software update thing-a-ma-jig... nuttin either.

Anyone have a solution?

-Frustrated!

Hi,

What O/S are you using? Canon's RAW software update thing-a-ma-jig only works for Vista 32 bit and not Vista 64 bit.

Assuming you mean 'Canon RAW Codec for Windows Vista'

Hi back,

Running Windows XP Pro

I went here for that Canon RAW software: http://www.usa.canon.com …egoryid=225&modelid=15206 (external link)

It's for Vista and XP. But as I just found the link for you I noticed that it says "Requires a WIC-compatible application, example: "Windows Live Photo Gallery"

Poop.

Anyways... this is stupid. :) Arcsoft Raw should work! But no. Solution? Thanks!

Does it incorporate itself with Windows shell? I don't want to have to open a program to look at my thumbnails... I just want to quickly open a folder on my desktop and look at thumbnails like I can with my 20D photos.

Thanks for the insight.

I use Arcsoft's free codec which works fine with Window's Explorer in XP. Canon's has never worked for me.

After reading this thread, I was able to make it work by (1) removing useless MS raw thumbnail viewer; (2) installing latest Canon Raw codec (3) installing Arcsoft raw thumbnail viewer. Now I can see thumbnails of CR2 files in Explorer. BTW my default program to open them is IrfanView, it's very quick & excellent for reviewing files and doing some very basic adjustments.

That's pretty much what I did exactly.
