I knew that working with the 15mp files from my new 50D would slow down my computer but I didn't expect such a big time difference for converting the RAWs to Jpeg, I'm using DPP for the conversion and resized to 1200X800. I timed a few conversions and here is what it took for one picture.............

XTI (10mp)...............35 seconds
50D sRAW1 (7mp)....18 seconds
50D (15 mp)............2min. 45 seconds

Does this sound normal ? I really don't know the specs of my computer, so what should I be looking into to speed things up a bit ? other than a new computer.

Other than a new computer or upgrading, maybe more memory, try different software, if you have any. There are no settings that I am aware of in DPP that would speed up or slow down what you are trying to do. What you are doing is pretty generic accross different software in terms of the proccesing involved.

35 sec. to convert an XT file, to put it politely, is rather slow.

When I batch convert files from my 30D the conversions take a couple of seconds apiece. I am running a 2.4 ghz quad core with Vista and 3gb of ram.
I am sure from your description that a new computer will be your only cure. You will love it. I like to be able to make a 10x jump when I upgrade and it sounds like that is about where you are at.

You may not need a new computer but not knowing what you have makes it hard to say are you apple or windows? if you are apple i'm sorry but i can't help but if your running windows first go to control panel click on system this will tell you what processor and memory you have i assume you will not have much pentium4 2.6 gh is plenty but you want at least 3 gig of ram also while on the system properties box click advanced then performance settings performance options box click advanced then change virtual memory to maximum allowed i hope this has helped

It take me 6 sec to convert one XTI/400D-file so 35 seconds is very very slow.

Vista 64
AMD X2 2,8MHz
4GB memory.

Do as rawshorty told you.

Windows XP

248 mb RAM

I've been looking into upgrading the RAM, looks like 2gb is the max for my CPU. Maybe not the cure all but it should help ??

Sorry, I just couldn't help it!

248 MB of RAM is almost like not having any RAM -- I think that you will be very pleased with the performance improvement if you upgrade the RAM. But, first look at the actual RAM stick(s) to see what it says that it is -- If it says 2 GB, then there is some other problem preventing the RAM from being properly used.

Damn, I can't tell you guy's anything

Just got back from the Memory store, they only had 1 stick of 1gb RAM, I added that to the 1/4 gb in the computer and I'm back in business, I can't believe that I didn't do that a long time ago. 15mp picture conversion is down to 35 sec from 2 min 45 sec :D. I will hunt up another 1 gb and swap out the 248 with that, 2gb is the max for my computer.

Thanks for the help.............

248? That's hilarious! I didn't know computers had so little ram. Definitely go the the 2Gb total.

Just got off the phone with my buddy, he has something like 240gb in his, so I know I wasn't the slowest around :p

Just dropped in another 1gb card so now I guess this thing is as fast as it's going to get. Didn't pick up any more conversion speed over the 1.25gb setup but I'm sure it will help along the way. Should get me by for awhile but I'm sure I'll be looking at computers in the future.

Sounds like your running an old P4 based celeron. It might just be time for a full upgrade since you can now get 8gb of DDR2 for less than what 4gb of DDR1 costs.

If its RDRAM based, things get even worse. 256mb of RDRAM is the same price as 4gb of DDR2 right now.
