Just did q quick test.
40D RAW file: DPP convert to JPG 1200x800:

Windows Vista Home Premium, AMD Phenom 9600, 3GB RAM:
1 file: 6.5 seconds
10 files: 72 seconds
Windows Vista Home Premium, Intel Core2 Quad 6600, 4GB RAM:
1 file: 3.5 seconds
10 files: 40 seconds.

Huh. And I've been using the Intel Q6600/4GB RAM for watching TV and movies and doing all my photo work on the AMD system. Might have to switch functions (both have HD-DVD/Blu-Ray drives) and use the Q6600 for photo work - definitely faster on DPP conversions.

It may not be worth upgrading the RAM since the price of new machines is down so low.

Go to www.pcpitstop.com (external link), sign up for a free account, run their tests on your machine. They will give you lots to work on to improve the performance.
